Ascent Trip ReportPleasant hike up Sandwich Mtn in late winter. I went up the Sandwich Mtn Trail, working hard on the steep section as the trail made its way up the ridge toward Noon Peak. There were some tracks in the snow from hikers in the days prior, both snowshoe and boot tracks in the deep snow. Great views from a couple of points on the way up. I spent about five minutes at the summit of Sandwich in the cold wind, enjoying the view. I hadn't been here in quite some time, and it was nice to be back.
On the way down, I made the 0.2 mile side trip up Jennings Peak, taking in more views once there. After Jennings Peak, I turned onto the Drakes Brook Trail for the rest of the descent. Initially, the trail does a couple of switchbacks on the way down the steep slope, and from then on it was a gentle, enjoyable descent along the brook. That trail had gotten some prior use as well, mostly from non-snowshoe users, making the trail lumpy. Typically, after heavy snowfall, the first hikers break out trails on snowshoes, leaving a nice track, and then others follow on boots, making a mess of the trail. |
