Ascent Trip Reportgmaps will take you to the trailhead via the southern route of the attached driving track. this route is good dirt as it travels east, but as you approach the jog to the north it becomes rocky, requiring clearance and good tires. on the way out i tried another road, which was a bit less rocky, but had more clearance challenges. both ways are about equally good/poor, and 25min or so.
i loosely followed jon avery's track.
this was a consolation peak for me because my flight into vegas was delayed 3h, messing with my original plans of bagging grand cliffs wash in AZ. with the late arrival there was no way i'd finish that hike before dark... so i decided to bag something which would fit the remaining daylight (and get me a P1k for march 1st, since i didn't have this calendar day yet).
as i hiked up toward bard i would see occasional fresh footprints. it seemed odd to me that this peak could be popular enough to have a recent ascent... when i got to the register on bard i noticed "hey ken jones was here recently... hey wait, march 1st is today! haha".
on the summit of ireteba i had a freak out moment when my phone said it was already after 17:00, and i knew sunset was at 17:37 or so. so i started dashing downhill.. but as i did that i noticed the sun was at the wrong elevation for it to be that late in the day. then i realised my phone was on automatic time zone, and it had picked up the AZ towers and switched to mountain time. phew. didn't feel like finishing up with a headlamp.
