Ascent Trip Report

Really cool mountain with a very distinct profile from the horizon. Who knew these 3000 ft desert peaks could be so enjoyable?

Failed attempt up standard route - late start (4pm) with intention of catching 5:45pm sunset from summit and descending in the dark. Lots of thick brush in the gully on the standard route - plenty of scratch marks as a result! We reached top of gully at sunset and route to summit from there was not obvious. Turned around to be back at car for 7:30pm

Spent night in Needles, CA and returned the following day to get the summit.

Successful solo ascent via standard route. Some simple navigation is required towards the summit, but generally sticking left and following the odd cairn. Some minor scrambling and a pretty cool summit. I had plenty of time in the day so I decided to descend via the south-facing ridgeline which took much longer than the gully but was a lot of fun. There were some class 3 moves to get down on a few downclimbs and some pretty steep and loose inclines.

The GPS track is for my descent route. It's fun to follow the ridge if you have the time but my exact route probably isn't the most efficient route!

Returned to San Diego (4.5 hr drive) afterwards (received ticket in Mojave desert for talking on my phone!)
