Ascent Trip Report

We found Narnia. This hike literally felt like a dream. We had completed Castle Dome Peak in the morning, which was also a beautiful hike. The drive up to the white-capped Signal Peak was really cool - the Peak is impressive and dominates the surrounding Kofa Mountains landscape. It seems like a sacred place. We reached the trailhead for Signal Peak at 4:00PM, and with the 5:30PM sunset I knew we could make it to the top before it was dark. Whiley took some slight convincing to agree on it and we set off power hiking our way up. Before we knew it we hit snow. We were making fresh tracks on a delicate 4-inch layer of snow that had been there for a day now from the storm the night before. If anything could be compared to Narnia - this was it! The desert shrubs coated in a mystical white layer. Just incredible.
There were some icy sections that I'm sure were going to freeze over at night - any early morning hikes would require microspikes - but we were still ok without them. Reaching the summit right at sunset was magnificent. The surrounding landscape had a surreal element to it, with the rock from the neighboring Ten Ewe Mountain all lit up in a bright orange glow. I have never seen a more beautiful sunset landscape. Truly amazing.

We descended mostly in the dark with our headlamps and had a nice night car camping under the stars in the Kofa Mountains Wilderness.
