Ascent Trip Report

Wanting to so something different in winter I have eye-balled this big park for sometime. The maps are confusing as there are a lot of parcel assembled to make this County Park and it is adjacent to three Denver Mountain Parks (DMPs) and their trails intermingle. Usually JEFCO County Parks and DMPs have some sort of prominent feature but I could not find one here. There is as small USGS surveyed subpeak at elevation 8614 that looked like it might be on public lands but my bushwhack and post-holing through snow lead me to the obvious highest point in the public lands at elevation 8548 and there was no prominence. The fence was such that I could have continued post-holing to the USGS point nearby at 8614 but it is NOT on public land and it has minimal prominence so it was not worth it. I chose instead to "highpoint" the highest spot on the public lands.

The trails are well marked and easy to follow. The snow compact by hikers and with microspikes an easy hike. The bushwhack was miserable. Some pockets the snow was above my knees and post-holing 2.5 deep is tiring up hill. My poor dog as large as he is had trouble post-holing in such deep snow and elected to stop "leading" me and enjoyed following as I broke snow for him. Not a very scenic hike either. But that is like my 20th County Park HP in JEFCO and you never now until you explore each of them.
