Ascent Trip ReportParked car at Kokee Lodge, began mountain biking at 6:33 am. Reached trailhead about 7:30 am and started hiking. Made it to summit at 11:17 am. Back to bike at 3:30 pm and car at 4:30 pm. Total car-to-car time of 10 hours; hiking time 8 hours.
Heavy rain, fog, wind, and temps in the upper 40Fs most of the day. Waialeale rain gauge recorded about 3.5" of rain while I was out. Goretex rain jacket stopped being waterproof after 2h. Luckily, I brought a wetsuit top, which proved to be vital.
Stream crossings: two stream crossings on road were flowing fast and deep (~15" deep), would have been dicey for a 4wd. Big tree down over road at mile 4, would require chainsaw to remove. Koaie stream on trail was OK in morning, but rose significantly over the course of the day and required some swimming on the way back in the afternoon.
Saw one other person on the fenceline, who worked for The Nature Conservancy, checking for animals in the traps. He had been helicoptered in a few days earlier. We were very surprised to see each other, given the conditions and remoteness.
