Ascent Trip ReportThanks to some peakbagger and other trip reports I had a little information about how to go about getting permission to hike Cerro Cantillana before showing up. Based on what I could gather, the area is managed by a private organization called Altos de Cantillana Corporation, which operates as a reserve. Public access is granted, but you need to arrange a permit reservation beforehand. They require every party to have at least two members and your itinerary must include two nights with the expectation that you camp at the pozones. Their website (http://www.altosdecantillana.org) has helpful information on it, but it is not reliably updated. I attempted to make a reservation via email, but the address listed on their site for reservations is defunct. The phone number +56 990964295 is in service, but no one answered.
So, I went out there anyway with the hope that maybe we’d be able to get permission at the gate. The entrance to the reserve is not hard to find, but the gate was locked and the parking lot was quite empty. Undeterred, we hoped the stone fence in an obvious spot and went up to the office. After a minute an older ranger showed up and explained that the park was closed due to fire danger insisting that this information was posted on the website. In fact, the reserve is closed until April, and it would seem that this is perhaps standard practice nowadays. He was helpful, but it was quickly clear that no amount of pleading with him would get us access. The air quality was low and the sun was pretty intense, so it’s probably a better idea to do this outside of the summer months anyway.
There was a sign at the park that gave different contact information for reservations that may be helpful to future peakbaggers: email@example.com. (This also likely indicates that there is in fact a different website for the reserve.)
