Ascent Trip Report

This was a great accidental hike while I was on a ski trip with my parents. I decided I wanted to hike up somewhere for sunrise to do some photography in the mountains. So my father and I hired some snowshoes from the great little ski hire shop 'Snowbox'.

We woke early around four o'clock well before the first light of the day and headed out from the hotel in Montgenevre. we headed through the town to the ski school. Once we kitted oursleves up with the snowshoes we made our way up the piste towards the forest. Everything was calm and the sky clear, with the lights of Montgenevre disapearing behind the forest. We were almost the 'Les Anges' the mountain cafe but were confronted my a mean looking mountain dragon(aka. a piste basher) lighting up the piste and forest.
With our headlamps on to let the driver know of our presence, we stopped for a minute and let it pass and then took a proper break on the empty terrace.

We followed the green run 'Sagnes' through the bowl skiing area all the way to the top. The valley looked amazing illuminated by the piste bashers as they worked their way up and down. It started with a shallow gradient but towards the end it was more like a blue/red run. The light was starting to appear revealing a great mountain silhouhetted horizon against a blood orange sky. We made a last final push to the summit with enough time to set the gopro up for a timelapse and the tripod up to get some shots.
We were treated to an amazing sunrise along with amazing cloud formations. To the West the whole mountain range with the famous french peak 'Barre Des Ecrins' at the center slowly illuminated as the sun revealed itslef.

An amazing 50 minutes freezing my ass off , with the highlight HEARING THE WOLF YAWN on the other side of the fort. Definitely not a bad first night summit in the French Alps.

p.s also heard a wolf howl in the distance on the return hike.
