Ascent Trip ReportI drove in from the north on Kimball Hill Road, which isn't maintained in winter. The steep section of road north of here was covered with ice, and I was happy that my car easily made it up the slope. I parked at the 895' spot elevation, and continued west on foot along the gated road, into the Society for the Preservation of NH Forest property. That road was also very icy, requiring careful walking much of the way.
Then I reached Heald Road, and saw that logging operations were underway on Fisk Hill. They weren't working on this Sunday morning, but the equipment was all there. I didn't have a trail map, so I started out on one path that ended up going south a short distance to the pond. I went back to Heald Road, and took another path west (again, lots of ice) and then saw a trail with a sign for Fisk Hill, which I followed. Once I was higher up the hillside, I wasn't dealing with ice anymore, but then I entered an area that was mostly cleared of trees, which I crossed before reaching the summit. There is a large cairn up there. I went ahead and descended a bit to the town line, for the Wilton town highpoint, although town highpointing isn't something I've gotten serious about thus far. I reached the highpoint area along an old stone wall marking the town line, and then retraced my steps back up to the summit.
I descended a bit to the logged area (with newly-opened views), and saw a sign for the Lower Fisk Hill Trail, which I decided I'd follow for a different route down. I soon lost the trail in heavily logged areas, and I walked along the SW part of the lower hill to the southeast of Fisk Hill. I came out on the wide, icy path that I'd been on earlier, taking me back to Heald Road, and then I followed the gated forest road back to my parking spot. Not a bad casually-paced 4-mile hike on a cold morning.
