Ascent Trip Report

Followed the Gerlach/Newman/Christensen track. Really nice route if you can stay on the miners' trails. Like them, I started up the first saddle in the gully. Very tedious. There's a nice trail going from higher up the mine road to that saddle. Getting over to the NW gully is much easier if you can keep the trail. It is often 40 or so feet up from the gully, and can be hard to spot if you lose it. I wasted a lot of time route-finding. Starting up the NW gully, I took the left fork, following their track. The right fork also looks just as well. Even the smaller gullies branching left, more directly toward the summit, looked okay. But they're a bit steeper, and I wasn't feeling adventurous. A few catclaw, but overall, this is the driest and most barren range I've found. Based on others' reports, and seeing the terrain, I think there are a bunch of decent routes to choose from.
