Ascent Trip Report

attached driving track (based on paul mcclellan's directions) starts from the edge of the forest. gmaps will get you here fine, but don't ask it to take you direct to the trailhead: gmaps doesn't know the full extent of forest road 659, and it will insist on taking you through private property.

any car will make it fine to the edge of the forest, where you'll find ample camping opportunities. however FSR 659 is really a hi-clearance, all-terrain tire type of road. i would probably have used 4L in a few spots, but greg toughed it out in 2L in his tacoma. it's not a fast road... assume 1h10m one-way for the attached route.

the hike starts by dropping some 200' to a canyon, and reclimbing it out the other side, to attain the preferred ridge. there might be some way to avoid this if you explore the roads further, but we went with the well understood route.

i marked "bushwhack" because "open country" really is too generous. the route is more of a brush/cactus avoidance exercise, and with rocky hazards hidden in the grass. don't let the sat view fool you. it's difficult to move fast. there are numerous animal trails which sometimes help, sometimes don't.

there was a bit of snow on the north sides of the ridge... which could easily have been avoided, but i'm a sucker for stomping in some snow just to be able to check the "snow on ground" box.
