Ascent Trip ReportI did this peak because it’s a P900 and I have been filtering down to P900 lately in case something gets re-surveyed and promoted to P1k. So, dumpster diving I went... There are a bunch of no parking signs at the end of Scotty Rd at the gate, so since I was on a bike, I opted to park back at the intersection where I had seen a big pullout. Plus the frequent traffic on the main road would decrease the likelihood of a break in here in Meth Falls... I made the quick ride back to the gate which is only signed “authorized personnel only.” I figure that I am authorized, so all good! The quarry was not operating on this Saturday. Since the road goes right through an area that would be crawling with workers on a work day, I would suggest a weekend ascent. A second gate was reached just after bending north from the quarry, signed to allow non-motorized recreation. So, this one seems legal to me. The first large lake is quite pretty, then the uphill grind begins. After another flat section past a clear cut and a lake that is just on the other side of some trees, the road to the summit spurs off to the right. I followed this to the top. The antenna and microwave farm are not on the true summit and the microwave was really low to the ground so I didn’t want to get in front of it to see if there was a view and get my DNA fried... Near the buildings, I ditched the bike and cut into the nice open forest and made my way to the high point, a stump with a small rock on it. I had a signal here and after texting Becca, who was stuck on call at the hospital, I saw that I could pick up a bonus bump with another 900’ gain from my ascent road. The road up Smelling Mtn is a lot less used, but no problem to ascend on a bike, just required going under a log and over another one. GPS went a little haywire on both descents, probably because I was hauling so much ass. Stick to the logging roads on sat view nearest my track and that’s where I was. Pics |
