Ascent Trip Report

Re-climbed Rabun Bald (Beegum Gap Trail) and Flint Knob to get to Alex Mountain. I had already climbed those two mountains on the way to Flat Top earlier but ran out of light and wasn't able to hike Alex on my earlier hike. This hike was for Alex. There is a marked trail (small round metal "hiker stick-figure" markers nailed to trees) that leads to the gap between Flint Knob and Alex Mountain (Alex Gap) but both the markings and the trail disappear in the Gap. To the West of the last trail marking in the gap, someone has left marking tape around a tree (lots of tape, about three wraps around a tree and an excess of at least eight feet hanging off the tree) in an effort to guide hikers up the correct ridge to Alex. However this can be confusing because if you search a little you can see old red paint marking on some trees that will lead you to the north and closer to private property (two older houses). Stick to the ridge and avoid the private property. Near the top, you'll have to walk around a fenced-in water tower and on the backside of the tower you'll pick up a herd path the to top (where the comms sight is). On Alex the views looking back to Flint and Rabun are about as good as it gets. Lastly, on the day of my hike (during the government shut down) there was LOTS of downed tree. Basically the route to Flint and then Alex more closely resembled a bushwhack.
