Ascent of Baldpate Mountain on 2019-01-05
|Date:||Saturday, January 5, 2019|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||3780 ft / 1152 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI hiked up on snowshoes from the Route 26 trailhead, following snowshoe tracks to the upper Table Rock trail junction. Above that point, I followed a set of boot prints in fresh snow, probably from the day before. It is a tough grind up to the west peak of Baldpate, and at that point the other hiker had turned around, leaving me to break out the trail the rest of the way to the higher east peak. There was unconsolidated snow in some places, and bare rock in the open areas. There was a mix of rock and ice on the slopes leading up the east peak, requiring caution. Nice views in all directions on this mostly cloudy day. The wind and cold were bearable, and I stayed at the summit for a few minutes to enjoy the barren landscape and the views.
I descended the same way, taking the blue side trail to Table Rock, taking in a nice view of Old Speck once there. I tried descending the orange trail, but I turned back after about an eighth of a mile, deciding to abandon that route for today. The orange trail is steep, with the snow completely unbroken, and with icy rocks, and with a couple of spots requiring contortions to fit through. It looked like it would be too mentally and physically taxing of a descent, given the conditions. I instead descended from Table Rock on the blue trail to the AT, back to Route 26. I'll hike the orange trail on Table Rock some other time, probably using it as an ascent route.
