Ascent Trip Report

From HWY 542 take Mosquito Lake road then left on North Fork road shortly after bridge over the Nooksack river.
About 1.5 miles after pavement ends take right fork (just before Racehorse Creek) and follow road to gate about 2 miles at 1200' elevation.
Keith & I brought bikes & went about 3.5 miles to a left fork (straight goes a half mile to Canyon Lake) & then pushed bikes up.
Active logging in about a half mile, continued on road staying left at forks. About 5.5 miles from the start we encountered snow and parked the bikes, continuing on foot. In about a half mile the road crests at the summit area between the two closed contours. From the road crest we went right (east) and entered thick woods reaching the undistinguished high point (no views) in a couple hundred feet and beyond a ways to be sure we hit the highest point. Returning back to the road we were ready to head back but I felt that the smaller NW closed contour should be visited as well just to cover the bases. I spotted an older road that was somewhat obscured at the start and followed it, turned out to be very open and headed directly to the NW closed contour. The road shortly ended at the base of a rocky outcrop which had great views down to the Nooksack River and out to San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains beyond. This is a former hang glider launch site and the GPS indicated it to be 12 feet higher than the SE closed contour.
Sure glad that we went the extra distance both in that we got to the higher point but also the outstanding views. Nice and quick descent with the bikes made for a fun outing.
