Ascent Trip Report

DPS #53: A nice climb of East Ord. We camped near the trailhead. We followed the DPS Guide to get to the TH. Note, the branch road to the TH (BLM 6659) is not suitable for 2WD passenger cars but a high clearance could make it.

From the 2WD parking spot next to a concrete pad where an old corrugated steel tank once stood, we walked up the road, checked out an old mine, went back and descended an embankment to the wash proper. We were able to stay out of the wash by walking on the bank to the SW of the wash. Several wash pools were filled with water.

After .25 mile, we headed North up to a saddle and gained the ridge. We followed this ridge Northwest to the summit.

Route finding was clear and easy and we varied between the south side and the north side of the ridge as the terrain warranted. We saw a herd of 10 Bighorn on the ascent to the ridge. There were faint use trails, and a few ducks in places. The summit views are fantastic!

After Gaining the summit, we decided to drop down to the saddle west of the peak to try the other DPS route. On the way down, we spotted the single Bighorn ram on the south side of the wash. The gully has lots of loose rock, and the waterfall pitches, although slight and easily avoided, required some care. Because of the loos rock, the descent will be more pleasurable if the gully is avoided. I recommend using the ridge route both up and down.

We returned to the 2WD parking spot and declared, “A fine peak”.

With husband Brian.
