Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Bill Simpson, Virginia Simpson
Nice hike on a cold and windy day, with Virginia up front nearly the whole way. Good dirt road from Pine Canyon (N2) that hardly even needed HCV. We followed the standard HPS route to Burnt with a diversion that took us off the dirt good at about 5,400' and took us on a well-defined use trail that led us up the north and west sides of the peak to the summit. We got Little Burnt on our way back by heading up its eastern ridge on a steep and slippery class 2 brushy mess of a slope, and then back to the parking area for a quick lunch. The gate to Sawtooth was locked at the Burnt parking area, so we headed to Sawtooth from there; up and down, up and down, up and down. Good use trail all the way there; crazy steep up the final bump to the summit. But it was cold and breezy so the going was pretty simple. Great views out there!
Total mileage for the day was about 13 miles with about 3,500 feet of gain. 7.5 hours for the whole thing.
Our group to Sawtooth consisted of:
