Ascent Trip ReportThe previous trip reports were a little vague and dated. I took the MTR to the Central station, and exited on Central G for Pedder Street. This is by no means the easiest way to get to the top, but was the most direct. About 1600 ft gain in just under 2.5 miles (avg 7 degree incline). Off of Pedder St. I connected to Wyndham up past the Fringe Club. A left turn on Glenealy until the next intersection, and straight ahead on Albany Rd. This walks you right in between the Hong Kong Zoo and gardens, which has opened gates and free admission, and is a nice diversion on the way up or back. Walking ahead connects you with Old Peak Rd. and past the Dynasty Tower and Hillsborough Court buildings. Shortly after, Old Peak Road becomes a pedestrian only path with numerous switchbacks on the way up. When it seems you've finally made it, you find yourself at the Peak Tower attractions and the cable car station. I took a small break here. Mt Austin Road takes you higher, past the playground and then the governor mansion's guard post. You finally get to a pavilion with a small shop, bathrooms, and taxi parking area. This is an overlook for Telegraph bay to the south. If you continue on Mt. Austin Rd, you see a big sign warning authorized access only due to the radio station (no military outpost that I could see). The sign stands at about 520m elevation. If you backtrack on Mt. Austin to the last fork and take that up, the Peakbagger app and Google maps show a trail that meets Mt Austin Rd. The trail actually splits, and if you go to the right, you reach a outlook area clear of trees that overlooks Kowloon, HK Island, and the Peak Tower area. This path also takes you right up the fence that surrounds the radio station and a gate with a sign stating 24 hr CCTV, and sits at 540m plus. All I had was my phone and topo map, so best estimates for elevations. |
