Ascent Trip ReportWe didn’t really attempt this one, just did some driving and thought about hiking. TR more for information for other peakbaggers.
We were going to do the easy drive up route on this one as daylight was running out after our stop in Joyce after Pk 2731. The Striped Pk Rd from Freshwater Rd is gated at 500’ or so. Fucking DNR and their desire to only serve loggers and not recreational users. Looks like the gate is to keep people out of the brand new logging clearcut block. I would guess that when the logging is done, DNR will leave the locked gate just to keep out hikers, hunters, etc. Should you wish to do this peak via the previously reported route, it is technically closed during logging operations, though it would be easy, 2ish miles and 700 gain one way.
Not super interested in a headlamp descent, we went over to Salt Creek Recreation area to check out the old WWII gun placements and actually found that there is a very nice trail up this peak from the county park. Day use is free, gate closes at 9pm daily. Since the trail would take a while with a sea level to summit and it was nearly dark, we skipped it and noted it for the next time. Looks like the route from Salt Creek would actually be a pleasant hike and not just a dull drive-up, so we look forward to returning to do this as a hike sometime in the future.
