Ascent Trip Reportattached is driving track for the eastern approach. the road starts out great, but as indicated with a waypoint, becomes worse as you get within 5mi of the trailhead. it first goes through a very large wash (visible on USGS map), which involves much up/down, and a few sandy sections. then as it leaves the wash it enters rocky hell.
in the rocky hell section you'll frequently see a better looking road segment north or south of the hell you're in, but the better road sections have been blocked off by a ridge of rocks, plowed into place probably the last time they maintained this road. it's like they deliberately chose the worse road. as the road enters the wilderness cut-out it becomes the worst. i definitely wouldn't go past the wash without all-terrain tires and high-clearance.
tip for when you're driving out afterward: never take the good road segment, it's always the one which will be blocked off by a ridge of rocks at the far end. always take the worst road segment.
budget 1h10m one-way from pavement to trailhead or vice versa.
the hike is typical DPS: rocky route finding, slow going, ankle and knee workout. class 2+. i enjoyed the red/rust coloured rocks everywhere.
