Ascent Trip ReportEasy climb with outstanding views of Lac des Deux Montagnes. This summit is not the Park's Highpoint.
I found to my surprise that Mont Calvaire d'Oka is not the Highpoint of Parc National d'Oka. I first cross-country skied part-way up this mountain back in the seventies and I've always understood it to be the Highpoint of the Park. At the summit it is evident that it is not ..... much higher ground exists to the northeast.
The climb is short and easy and by far the most popular destination in the Park, next perhaps to the beach in the summer. This Park and this summit is historic. It is capped with 3 small Chapels dating back to 1740, part of the churches effort to evangelize the American Indian. The actual Highpoint is on one of the bumps behind (north) the Chapels. You are rewarded with an outstanding view of Lac des Deux Montagnes and the Saint Lawrence River valley beyond, a picnic table to one side on the Chapels was occupied by 3 cyclist enjoying a well deserved rest.
Park information and trail maps (hiking and biking) are available at the Park's Main Entrance on hwy #344 (reached from Montreal by driving west to the village of Oka via Hwy #640 and #344). There is a 3$ per person entry fee.
When I got home I checked my Topo maps and found that the Park's Highpoint is located northeast of Mont Calvaire d'Oka, on the Park's North Boundary Line at the south face of Montagne du Radar. I will come back to check out this Highpoint and add it to the PB data base.
ADDENDUM #1 DATED 2010-04-19
I came back on this day to climb Parc d'Oka Highpoint and Montagne du Radar. See TR for Montagne du Radar for the details.
