Ascent Trip Report

This scramble was part of an 8 summit peakbagging trip in Colorado and Utah. I drove over from Mt. Elbert and camped back in the trees at La Sal Pass, finding a really beautiful area with few people there. I ascended on the Mt. Tuk trail which is mapped at the TH and takes one further west. I found gaining my elevation on a nice trail allowed me to avoid the steep scree and rock reported by others who went up the direct creek route. While rewarded with a herd of 40 or so mountain goats, along with the easier hike, doing the ridge route I had hoped for didn't materialize the way I expected. I had hoped to ascend to the main ridge running from Mt. Tuk and follow it all the way around to Mt. Peale. About a 1/3 of a mile or so scrambling across led to steep rock bands that I had wanted to avoid. I skirted below these on steep scree and talus which was slow going the roughly 1/4 mile to more gentle slopes. Once I pulled myself out of this, the going was much easier across the gentler slopes to access the long final ridge to Mt. Peale's summit.
