Ascent Trip Report

After climbing Mount Baldy the previous day, it was time for San Gorgonio Mountain, which is the hardest of the "three saints" of Southern California (at least as determined by the easiest routes). I drove from my hotel in Riverside to the Vivian Creek trailhead, which already had a number of cars in the lot. I parked in the free section of the lot and started up the trail shortly after 8am. Snow began to cover the trail not long after the initial climb up from Mill Creek Wash and crossing the wilderness boundary. I continued past Halfway and High Creek Camps, after which the path through the snow began a set of long meandering switchbacks. I took the opportunity to more or less climb right up the snow slope. About halfway up, I put on my crampons and got out my poles, but my axe wasn't necessary. I reached the top of the ridge and continued down it to meet up with the trail, which wrapped around from the slope below. From there, it was a relentless but relatively easy climb up to the summit plateau, and then a quick walk the rest of the way to the summit, which I reached around 12:30pm. I met a party of two at the summit who had started around 6am. I generally followed my same route on the descent, cutting the most egregious of the switchbacks. In my quest to become a trail runner and have my body accept it, I started jogging on the descent near the wilderness boundary, which was made somewhat easier by my poles. I returned to the crowded trailhead around 3:30pm, where I continued to my next hotel in Palm Desert. I ordered a pizza and prepped for the next day's easy climb of San Jacinto Peak.
