Ascent Trip Report

I had a quick breakfast at my hotel in Colton and drove to Manker Flat, where there were maybe twenty cars already parked along the road. I started up the gated road just before 7:30am. I walked right by the steep cutoff trail to the Baldy Bowl about a mile in, but luckily I quickly realized my mistake. I reached the ski hut around 8:45am, and shortly thereafter the trail became snowy enough to warrant the use of my crampons. The conditions were perfect for them, and I cruised up the trail through the trees to the summit ridge. I arrived at the very, very windy summit around 9:45am. A dog arrived a minute after me, followed by six other people. The wind relentlessly sandblasted snow into my face, and after snapping a few photos I started back down. I took off my crampons at the ski hut, where I ran into some folks contemplating whether to continue to the summit in worn-out tennis shoes. Another seemingly underequipped group I passed surmised that they would cover the remaining 2,500ft of vertical in an hour going at a "good pace." I jogged the last portion on the road and arrived at my car around 11:20am.
