Ascent Trip ReportDrove up the dirt road as noted in the HPS Guide. There were several roads that crossed one another after passing the last house, so I had tracks uploaded on my GPS to ensure I took the correct road that eventually led to the canyon. The road was rough in spots, but a high clearance 2WD truck can make it to the parking area.
Hiked along the road toward a wash, and then in the wash to the base of the slope leading to the saddle between Heald and Nicolls. Instead of heading directly toward the saddle, drifted more to the south of bump 5207 to save some time. Once reaching the ridge picked up the use trail and continued toward the class 2 section. Snow had fallen a week prior, so this section was snow covered, but not icy. Followed the ducked trail to the plateau where I was greeted by a sea of poodle dog bush. Parted the sea by brushing against it for the several hundred yards. Eventually made it to the summit and signed the register. The return was easy, as I followed my footprints in the snow. Once down the class 2 section, I realized it was not the safest thing to do (descending class 2 in the snow alone). Followed the ridge toward Nicolls to the saddle and up the ducked route to the summit where I found and signed the register. Descended along the same route and attempted to take the ridge heading west down to the wash, but lost the trail and headed across some boulders to a scree slope where I descended.
