Ascent Trip ReportAfter a little difficulty finding the trailhead, we made it and were greeted by a full parking lot, so we parked on the road. Found out that the reason there were so many cars was that there were a bunch of AMC trips running, and we passed them frequently. It was nice to overhear the little tidbits that they were telling their groups; always happy to learn more about efficient winter hiking.
After a short flat section, the trail got pretty steep very quickly. It was really hot, so we were down to our t-shirts on the way up. The trail also happened to be not very icy at all, which made going up the steep parts not too tricky. At the summit trail junction, we geared up to head above the treeline. Since it was such a beautiful day, I thought that the full ski goggles and face coverage would be excessive, but I'm glad I followed the lead of the AMC groups.
The higher up we got, the worse the weather got. While it had been a little windy and cloudy all day, it got ridiculous. After getting up over a little bump to the summit ridge, we were in near whiteout conditions, barely able to see the next cairn. There were a=lso wind gusts up to 40 mph. I felt like I was being blown away. We made it safely back below the treeline and I was thrilled after my first winter alpine experience.
We delayered then had a jelly wrap for lunch because we didn't have any way to spread our peanut butter. We then tagged South Peak, where we were given some brief blue skies. We then proceeded to butt slide down a whole bunch of the mountain, resulting in a speedy descent.
