Ascent Trip Report

Trailhead is located at the end of Black Balsam Road east of the BRP near the junction with NC 215. Stopped there to photograph the sunrise. From the trailhead, descend gradually to an open field gap where you will see Sam Knob in full splendor before you. The SK Trail veers north and switchbacks up to the north summit (HP) and then you can wind your way back through deer trails to the south summit. Amazing 360 degree views at both spots. The day I visited the wind was whipping up scud clouds from the valley, but I could still see crisp views of the Great Balsam Mountains, the AT to the north and west, as well as the Black Mountains to the east. Returning to the parking lot I saw many more folks headed up. This peak and Black Balsam make an incredible day hike, but come early before the parking spots fill up.
