Ascent Trip Report

Arthur and I rented a car and did La Malinche as a good warmup hike. We rested a day and then drove up the dirt road to 13,700’ on the south side of Orizaba. A couple hour walk brought us to campsites near the 15,500’ refuge.

We started summit day at 5 am and made the peak 3h later. Don’t get up too late or rockfall intensifies. No crampons or ice ax were required. You can get a good view of the entire route from the Refuge and make a gear decision.

I definitely recommend considering the Southern route instead of the potentially icy northern option.
