Ascent Trip ReportSome say that it's possible to see all 40 of the Southern Sixers from the top of Crabtree Bald, which is a good testimony to the power of prominence. Crabtree ranks 75th in NC in elevation but is 7th in prominence. There is clear line-of-sight to all the Sixers ranges (Smokies, Balsams, Blacks, and Roans), but I suspect that a few of the specific peaks are eclipsed from here. I didn't get a chance to enjoy the views because of low clouds. The rime ice was spectacular, but this is one time I really wanted to see the horizon.
Crabtree Bald is on private land, and you need permission from the landowner for the most direct route from the east (following Ken Jones' 2017 GPS route). From Bald Creek Road, the hike is 8 miles roundtrip, gaining 2120 feet.
With this climb, I completed the list of 11 NC peaks with at least 2,000 feet of prominence.
