Ascent Trip Report

From Santiago de Atitlan the previous day with a view to camping near the saddle between the main and subsidiary summits.

The path, having left the town via a narrow alley, then follows an established path up through fields of maize and peas, past avocado trees and coffee bushes and then into forest.

There is a path to the summit. But we camped in an informal area around 80m below the saddle.

We took the opportunity to go up to the summit area that evening and watch the sunset over Volcan San Pedro.

The following morning we left camp early to watch the sunrise from the top. The whole summit area is covered in trees and scrub making views difficult. There are a number of established viewpoints around the fringe of the summit area and we stopped at a couple of them, one with an absolutely stunning sunrise over Volcan de Acatenango and Volcan de Fuego. The true summit is just off one of the paths that criss-cross the summit area and involves a bit of a fight through undergrowth.

Up to the campsite in 5 hours and down in 3 hours. A further 20 minutes up to the summit from the campsite.
