Ascent Trip ReportMax and I had a great trip to Huckleberry Ridge and lucked out with the weather. It took us about 3 hrs round trip from the upper gate, an easy road walk with a little 'shwack at the end to the high point. This is my 28th county HP in Washington.
A few notes about gates and access. There is a New Lower Gate as of early 2018. Once you turn onto Elochman Valley Road, the gate is 7.4 miles in. This gate was not in place (i.e. open because the gate structure wasn't present though the side mounts were) on Nov 11, and I expect that it follows the same opening schedule as the other gates. The New Lower Gate is at approximately 46°16'8"N 123°17'18"W (I grabbed these coordinates from Google Earth, so no guarantees--the important part is that it's 7.4 mi from the turnoff). When I scoped this road out on 5/5/18 the new gate was in place with signs declaring the area private property and "road closed to public use pursuant to Wahkiakum County Resolution #50-2018 and in accordance with RCW 47.48.010." So, it appears the offseason hike from the Lower Gate is now an offseason hike from the New Lower Gate--even longer with scarier signs. I only have two data points for this New Lower Gate though, so maybe it is open during other times of the year.
Then, it is another ~4.3 miles to the Original Lower Gate, which Adam Helman marked at 46.31811° N, 123.26019° W. The Original Lower Gate was also open on Nov 11, which lines up with its historic opening schedule for elk hunting (first Saturday to second Sunday in Nov).
From there, Edward Earl and Adam Helman's trip reports plus GPS tracks of prior visitors provide the information needed to get to the seemingly always closed Upper Gate and on to the high point.
