Ascent Trip Report

This was a trip to a number of minor bumps and the peak of North Fortuna. Peak 1243 is one of about five bumps on North Fortuna herself, though the high point is at 1297. Leaving the Seda Trailhead, I soon encountered a roadrunner, which I followed around, taking stills and video. The minor bumps in this trip were Peaks 875, 809/810, and 781. Parenthetically, Fortuna Mountain was called Nellie by the Marines at Camp Elliott in the earliest days of World War II. This was because Fortuna Mountain resembled the silhouette of a woman lying on her back. For a brief moment, my father was training was training to be an artilleryman and the height of marksmanship was to land a shell on Nellie's, ummm, upper torso development. The spot is now known as North Fortuna Summit, aka Peak 1297 aka Nellie's Chest. For my own mental mapping, I refer to the bumps on North Fortuna Mountain as Nellie's Topknot, Nellie's Face, Nellie's Chest, Nellie's Knees, and Nellie's Toes. Give me a few minutes, and I will prepare a graphic to illustrate this point. In any case, Peak 1243 on the Peakbagger map is Nellie's Face. For the purposes of this hike, I hiked all of the Nellie's bumps and peaks, and descended via Nellie's Toe, down to Fortuna Saddle. From there, I followed the trail to Hill 781, which is described in a separate entry. I ascended 781 from the trail to the south, and descended on the north side, wandered around a bit, and followed the based of 781 counter-clockwise until I returned to the trail. Trail led me back to Four Corners and the Seda Trailhead in Tierrasanta.
