Ascent Trip Report

Bring the good camera with the long lens.Come on a sunny day when the Santa Ana Winds clear away the haze. This could have been a drive-up, but I started at Silvercrest Picnic Area just to make it interesting. The route follows a trail and part of a road ending in a traffic circle at the base of Boucher Hill Lookout. There is a radio tower next door, the Lookout, and an observation deck. The Lookout is four stories of stairs, terminating at a glassed-in, working fire tower. Theoretically, the tower only accommodates four people at a time, but I was one of six. The views were spectacular, though a bit hazy. Tower is only open on weekends, but the views from the observation deck are also spectacular. You can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean and out to Catalina. Trip down is also fun, as you will notice the domes of the Palomar Observatory and at least one other dome.
