Ascent Trip Report

We ascended from the west, near the ski resort of Ovindoli, camping wild at the TH, no water, next to a picnic shelter with bear warning! (Appennine bears are luckily rare.) The route is well used and relatively obvious. The route commences along a gravel track- driving not authorised- to grassy limestone cow pasture. From here the summit ridge is visible, so pick your route across the grass and outcropping limestone- red paint came and went ( or we lost it). Seedheads suggested lots of wild flowers in summer. Once we reached the ridge ( steep drop one side; grassy slopes on other) we followed it easily to the summit, noting a path join from the valley, left, below . It took us 4 hours to reach the summit, which had a large metal cross and triangular Italian trig. The summit was busy with walkers approaching from all directions. The views are spectacular, notably down the steep cliffs. Descent,by a slightly more direct route, took 2.5 hours.
