Ascent Trip Report

Carroll County has purchased Blackjack Mountain with a vision of turning it into a park. Right now, however, it is gated and posted "KEEP OUT." I went to the historic courthouse in Carrollton, where the cordial chairman of the county commission gave me permission to hop the gate and walk up the gravel road to the top of the mountain. Another official who is familiar with the area warned me that the mountain was infested with rattlesnakes. I promised to watch out for them, though I saw none. There is supposed to be a benchmark but I didn’t see it, either. The ridgeline is fairly flat, and I thought the highest ground was south of the communications tower.

When you ask for permission, you are helping county leaders make the case for developing the park, so do ask before you go.

Access the gated gravel road to the summit from GA 100 at the Carroll/Heard county line. The Heard COHP is just a few miles away.
