Ascent Trip ReportMy track will be very close to that of Ken Jones' since there is only one route to the summit. I have added a number of waypoints for small shops and the basecamp. The shops were all open when I was there and they sell drinks, watermelon, fried banana and cigarettes. Our pace was not fast and it took about 3 hours from the start to get to Lake Ranu Kumbolo where we stopped for about an hour and had lunch prepared by our guide and porters. It was another 3 hours to the basecamp at Kalimati at about 8820ft. Next morning we start at 3:00AM and head through the forest then up the loose cinder route. We pass a number of Indonesians who had started at 1:00. I am much older than most of them, but they start and stop a lot and don't set a consistent pace. We reach the top after 3.5 hours where it is cold with a strong wind. My friend Shelley made it up in 3 hours and witnessed the mountain erupt with a cloud of smoke which fortunately blew off to the west. We take photos and have hot drinks from a thermos then head down a steep chute a bit east of the main trail. Back at camp we head out after a rest and snack and hike out to Ranupani. Many thanks to our guide Yoka from Exo Travel. Petter Bjorstad has a more complete trip report at his website. 10/18 RLC
