Ascent Trip ReportCharlie Zerphey and I are combined age 151, so you'll understand if we look for the path of least resistance. We didn't like what we read in previous trip reports about ravines, steep terrain, blown-down trees, and a false summit. We considered hiking up Forest Road 294, which is shown on the FS Topo overlay on ListsofJohn (and is labeled County Line Road on my car GPS), but this road is washed-out at the start and obviously abandoned. The same FS Topo shows some dotted lines going halfway up the mountain from Everett Springs Road, but when I called a ranger she said there were no trails there.
Finally, we got lucky when we stopped at the game-check station at the intersection of Everett Springs, Pocket Road, and Lake Marvin Road. No warden was on duty, but we did meet a friendly hunter who was familiar with the area and advised us of a fairly simple route that is 2.8 miles up (5.6 roundtrip).
Park at the fishing ramp where Everett Springs Road crosses Johns Creek. Walk west across the bridge to a gated dirt road on the right. Zero your mile-counter here. Follow the road a quarter-mile and turn left onto an uphill road that is shown as a dotted line on the USGS topo. At 1.4 miles, the road ends in a meadow where deer graze. Cross the meadow, and at 1.5 miles turn left into the woods and head west, aiming for the 1636 gap on the long ridge of Johns Mountain. This is an easy bushwhack of 0.4 miles through open woods. Reach the gap at 1.9 miles and then follow the ridge S/SW as it climbs the final 200 feet to the COHP at 2.8 miles. The ridgeline is rocky and wooded but not hard to walk. There are a couple of places where we dropped down the east flank to avoid thickets or blowdowns on the ridge.
