Ascent Trip ReportNice little hike to explore the alpine on a very interesting granite mastiff. The granite up here is filled with pink feldspar which easily erodes into chunky solid boulders that interlock and make great talus and scrambling areas and many tiny subpeaks, pinnacles, and hoodoos to play on. After driving up Pikes Peak for the second time in my life (yuck I really need to find time to hike it) I was itching to play on some rocks, and get some hiking in).
Looking at the twin peaks from the car you can not tell which is taller. Ironically, the further back peak (this one) look taller so I hiked over to it. Plus it had the more interesting top with much rock to climb up whereas the Little Pike was broad slopes of snow and less climbable rock. As it turns out this is NOT the taller of the two peaks. It was very misleading visually as this one barely has the 100 foot prominence threshold and the other is over 200. SO much for guessing. |
