Ascent Trip Report

This was a 6 summit visit for my wife, dog and I. Of all of the things we did in this journey, this silly little side extra credit trip was my favorite. Let's face it Pikes Peak is loaded with tourists and it is a drive up. Even if you hike it, you end up with a million cars at the top.

Along the drive route is some short scenic wonderful hiking but this little outcrop was really nice extra credit. I spotted the pinnacles on the way up. The pullout has spots for about 6 cars and all were being used as the temptation to get ones photo on a outcropping is too much for many.

Everyone was climbing the first or second pinnacle and the third grouping had my eye because it looked like the tallest and from the road it looked un-climbable. After exploring the ridge, clearly either the third or 4th pinnacle group is the tallest. I think it is the third. It is class 4 and 5 from the front face and the boulder columns stand up like fingers about 20 feet tall. But if you contour around to the backside there is many easier class 3 and class 3+ routes to chose from that are quite fun. Exposure, cracks, seams, fun stuff. I played around in this feature area for about 25 minutes like a kid and returned to the car. I always enjoy finding a feature that looks unclimbable then exlore it and find nature provides a backdoor.
