Ascent Trip Report

Had to walk Sawyer River Road because it was closed from damage. The Carrigain Brook crossing was very difficult and we had to take our shoes off. The Carrigain Notch Trail was lightly used but easy to follow. At the famous "bushwhack boulder", we joined a gentleman named Adam for the climb to Vose Spur. Adam was headed up for the reputedly nightmarish Vose-Carrigain Ridge. We went to the start of the herd path beyond the boulder and followed the path and a compass bearing to the crest of the ridge. There was a slight amount of bushwhacking involved here, as the path was not too well-defined. However, it was well flagged out by some jerk. On the ridge top, the path was easy to follow through open woods to the talus slope, where we stopped for lunch and good views. The herd path beyond the talus slope makes this the most difficult NE Hundred peak in my opinion. Even though it's not really a bushwhack, the incline of the path in this area rivals the most difficult White Mountain trails. The footing is loose, there are multiple cliffs to get around, and it is just insanely steep. At the top, there is a welcome flat area around a blowdown patch to reach the canister. The path was even more difficult going back down. If this was an official trail, it would be at the top of the "Terrifying 25" list. On the way out, we decided to cross Carrigain Brook at an easier spot and walk through the woods along the bank to get back to the Signal Ridge Trail.
