Ascent Trip ReportI generally don't like steep and trail-less, but had to admit this one was fun. There was no other choice. It looks daunting as you can see that it continues to get steeper the higher you go. You get funneled into a little cirque surrounded by now-too-vertical basalt pillars. But a little ledge going up to the right leads to an easy class-3 scramble to the top. The top is covered with fractured basalt pillars. Really unique.
From the Rawhide area, I drove around to the north of the mining area to the Regent Site, then followed the topo roads west then south then southeast over a pass and into the canyon NE of Pilot Cone. Roads were in surprisingly good shape for the terrain. Lots of washes to drive in or across and lots of shelves plowed into hillsides. Decent clearance still needed in a few places; couple steep parts I used 4WD, but might not have been necessary. I was in too much a hurry to take notes. On the way out, I even came over the pass, and made a wrong turn onto a road not mapped, and it took me over the Black Eagle Hill - Squaw Pk saddle and back to Regent; it was shorter and seemed a little better.
Instead of returning to Rawhide, I turned west and headed for US-95. Though it was obvious where you entered the Walker Indian Reservation, there were no signs prohibiting entry. Good road all the way to Schurz.
