Ascent Trip Report

Serge and I had decided to visit the Laurentians for this weekend. We settled on going to mont du lac de la Huppe then mont du lac du Coeur, in order to complete the easternmost 1000m peaks. On Friday, we met at 17:00 in Drummondville and it was agreed that I'd leave my truck there to ride with Serge. We took the road towards Québec, crossed town without issue, and stopped for supplies in Baie-Saint-Paul around 20:15.

We finally arrived at the ZEC Lac-au-Sable gate at 21:20, self-registered, and took the forest road north towards Club des Hauteurs. When we were past our expected trailhead, we started looking for a place to camp. We entered ZEC Bréboeuf but soon found the road blocked by fallen trees (there had been numerous blowdowns on the drive up). We backtracked to a deer stand on the roadside and set camp there in a furious wind and went to sleep around 23:00.

After a restless night due to the wind, we woke up somewhere around 08:00 and were up by 08:15. By 08:30 we were driving back south but as we reentered Club des Hauteurs, we noticed a sign with hunting season dates completely different from what we expected. Conferring, we decided to skip mont du lac de la Huppe as we didn't know if we would encounter hunters or not. After checking out from ZEC Lac-au-Sable, we drove back to Clermont and towards Saint-Aimé-des-Lacs where we checked in at ZEC des Martres from Dépanneur du lac Brûlé.

From there we took a left on chemin du lac-du-Pied-des-Monts heading west towards the mountains. The road turned to gravel and soon became a true forest road. It became progressively rougher as we climbed north in rivière du Gouffre's deep valley.
