Ascent Trip Report

We took the standard route from the end of Hidden Forest Road, a long dirt road that has been bulldozed through the desert. It is smooth but a bit rocky, and some clearance is handy. From the parking area it’s 5.5 miles up the long-deteriorated remains of a gravel road to the site of a 1930s-era cabin that can be reserved for camping. There are also picnic tables and a spring here. The spring was running at a trickle.

When facing the cabin, the route continues around its right side and up a dry wash through the sparse ponderosa pine forest, dodging occasional deadfall but mostly free of brush. At a saddle at 9100 feet, turn right and continue up a faint, cairned path to the summit. The last 1000 vertical feet are quite steep.

At the summit are some antennas, and views to the south, with other directions partially blocked by trees. The summit register is right next to the benchmark, and it includes some loose pieces of paper going all the way back to an ascent in 1963 by Barbara Lilley, Andy Smatko, and others. There’s also a mention of a SHIRAN team occupying the summit in that year. This is apparently an early geodetic survey method:
