Ascent Trip ReportThis is a very easy hike that the entire family can enjoy together. The loop trail is only about a 1.25 miles and is an easy grade, with a cool fire tower on top and a beautiful 360 view. From this trailhead there are several trails with many loops of various distances and destinations possible. Beech Mountain looks over Long Pond to the East
This particular hike was the kickoff of four days of hiking with some of my best buds. Jim and his son Danny flew up from Georgia, while Malcolm and I drove up from Schenectady, NY that day. Jim and Danny rented a car after arriving in Portland and we planned to meet at the Beech Mountain trailhead that afternoon. Since it was late in the day and we were dying to wet our appetite for hiking, we had decided we could fit this short hike in that afternoon. As it turned out, we arrived at the trailhead only about 10 minutes apart - pretty good timing! It was about 3:30 in the afternoon, so, we still had plenty of time to hike this one. We clambered up to the summit and soaked in the views of the Cranberry Isles and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately the fire tower was closed, however, we could still climb the stairs and get a view from just beneath the cab. After taking it all in, we continued on the loop around to the other side of the mountain where there are some beautiful views of Long Pond and the east coast of Maine. And then, before we broke a sweat, we were back at the car, ready to head to Millinocket.
