Ascent Trip ReportThis is the classic Newfoundland mountain hike--a well-maintained trail in a National Park to an exceptionally scenic summit that is the 2nd highest peak on the island. Even better, a strong hiker can easily make a loop hike, which adds variety and scenery to the hike. The extensive use of wooden boardwalks and stairs to traverse swampy or steep terrain is very helpful.
My only quibble is that the route up the steep SW gully of the main summit dome is not well marked. The route apparently follows the ravine with a large talus field of white rocks, but there are no cairns, signs, or footway that I could discern. Near the top of the talus field route markers re-appear, so it's no big deal, but this section is not up to the standard of the rest of the path.
Try to do this hike on a clear day. The views of the nearby ocean and the fjord-like Ten Mile Pond are spectacular--this peak has an almost "western" feel to it given the openness of the terrain and steep topography. I am sure this path gets crowded during the summer, but on a Thursday afternoon in October I only saw 2 other parties on my full loop hike.
