Ascent Trip ReportAaron thanks for entering this point so I did not have to. The prominence calc is a bit confusing too. Staying at a conference at Snow Mass. Got up early and grabbed the dog and headed down toward the creek and found an un-maintained use trail that took me to the parking lot (only holds 3 cars there but other parking is nearby) where the official trailhead of South Rim Trail starts. It is well signed, well maintained, and well used from here. A bunch of gentle switchbacks takes you to the main feature why all the bikes and hikers go up there - some sort of concrete pad dedicated to ying and yang. The actual peak is just across the road. There are lots of signs saying private property in the area. Just to the right of the peak it is saturated with the signs. to the left, I saw none. Skirting around to the left away from signs and rushing to the peak it was tagged easily and with no incident. There is no driveway, now fencing no sign of private residential land on this peak. What I did see was a large irrigation line with huge sprinklers going up the side of the hill. I presume then that this area may be a spray irrigation site for treated wastewater? There was no landscaping at all along this irrigation line.... perhaps that is why there is some signing to the right? in any case...... nice views of Chair Mountain from there or the ying yang deal and a nice walk. Heavily used area on a sandy crumbly ridge full of Colorado's only native oak species _ Gamble Oak. |
