Ascent Trip ReportFrosty Mountain 50k -- started from Lightning Lake taking Windy Joe trail and then merging onto the Frosty Loop trail. It was really cool seeing the PCT through hikers finishing their journey as we were going up the Windy Joe Trail. The Frosty Loop trail is a long climb with amazing views. Once you reach the next trail junction there is an out-and back summit trail. The summit is not part of the Frosty Mountain 50k course, but I could not simply bypdass this fantastic peak! From the junction it took me less than 10 minutes to reach the top. I was the first from the race to do this and I think some of the other racers followed me inadvertently. If I was the race director I'd have everyone go to the summit. Why not?? Liability I guess? It's just weird to me how there are runners who do mountain races but have no interest in summitting mountains. I have many ultra runner friends with this mentality.
It's awesome to summit these peaks in Manning Park as you can look South into the American Cascades and then look north at the Canadian expanse. Very cold on the peaks - I was wearing a short sleeve base layer, a long sleeve base layer, a t-shirt, and a jacket with a hood zipped all the way up with gloves and a warm hat. Not sure how the PCTers do this at night!
The second part of the course had us traverse part of Skyline Ridge. Super demanding with 20 miles under your belt at that point. Awesome and tough race. The rain even held out long enough until after the finish. Loved it!
EDIT: Now I'm just realizing I went up Frosty Mountain EAST! Blast!
