Ascent Trip Report

I hiked the Pelican Canyon trail from the Pelican Point overlook, following the gradual, then steep trail 2.25 miles to a split. Only one sign is at the split, pointing straight to Fish Lake Hightop, so I followed this, ignoring the faint trail and cairns to the right. I followed this to the Fish Lake Hightop ridge, but then I had to hike about 3 miles on the ATV road north to the large sign just before the summit. From the sign it is about .3 miles to the rocky summit, where I worked my way up through the boulders to the flat summit area, and worked my way up a boulder with a wooden tripod on it. Climbing up here, I found the benchmark and register. For the hike down, I followed the ridge road south about .25 mile to a sign on the left (southeast) indicating the Pelican Canyon Trail. I didn't see any cairns, but started hiking southeast until I did see cairns, and then an indication of a trail after a few cairns. My GPS track told me I was headed the right direction, so I continued to follow the cairns and trail (sometimes not obvious until hiking straight past the last cairn), which became more obvious as I hiked farther downhill. This led from open, rocky terrain, to the woods, and then descended to some fields, one of which reached the junction I had seen hiking up. This route is the one hikers should use, as it would cut off at least 2.5 miles from the loop I used.
