Ascent Trip ReportGreat news. Mt Grant can be done any old day, with some caveats.
You have to get clearance. You could in theory do this day-of, but I doubt it. My contacts suggest a week at least to do a background check on you. We negotiated it about two weeks in advance.
You email or call them, and they send an application. Fill it out for EACH person on the climb. They will get back to you after vetting you. Good for a year. Tell them the date you wish to come by. They insist you arrive by 3PM or sooner, as they want your butt out of there before dusk. It takes a solid 3 hours to do it, key pickup to key dropoff. Get the key from them in bldg. 37, first floor right where you walk in. The guards at the main gate will direct you, its straight down the road about 300 yards ,then right into the bldg. 37 parking lot.
Drive to the gate and open it and close it behind you. Road is excellent gravel bladed smooth, except in a couple of sandy spots. Tight willows encroaching in a few spots btw. Any vehicle beyond a Corvette or Cadillac could make it, call it a 2/10 on the 4WD scale. No need whatsoever for 4WD SUV or anything like that.
Once above timberline, keep on the main road to the top parking lot, right below the obvious summit pinnacle of jumbled volcanic talus and boulders, which is perhaps 2-300' high. Lots of wind but clear when we were there. The best path stays left through boulders, not right up steep talus and miserable scree. Summit is an enclosed area out of the wind. Register present.
I would say it is Class 2+, with hands on the rock in a few spots. Californians might not call it a 3.
Return key to bldg. 37 folks, who seem to be in charge with the facility and visitors. We drove up in 50 min from the gate, down in 40. Please don't drive that fast; allow closer to an hour each way..... It is 17.0 miles from the hwy, which is 1.0 from the gate, with tight hairpins up high. Lots of bear scat on road, even above timberline.

If some years go by, and these two people are no longer at Hawthorne Army Depot, just call the main number and ask for their replacements, telling the operator what you want to do. They have been open to anytime visits for the past year or more.
