Ascent Trip Report

Next stop after hiking Elephant in the morning. We followed the directions of Aleksey Zinger (also on PeakBagger). These directions were up-to-date and very detailed - thanks! The conclusion that the road is drivable in a truck with good clearance, however, I found a bit off. We rented a jeep specifically for this purpose and still turned back just before the parking area. The road is an absolute nightmare and any sane person without a jeep should choose to walk the last 2 miles. Once you get to the "parking area" by foot or vehicle, there is a really nice view of the Rangeley High Peaks, especially Saddleback and Crocker. Walking the road past there is pretty straightforward except for one spot near the streamed mentioned in Zinger's report. Make sure to bear right at this spot instead of following the steeper road heading to the left. Also, don't worry about finding the left turn onto the "Boundary Line Trail". You first have to walk past all the raspberry-filled logged areas, then go into a narrow, woodsy corridor before you get there. The turn is clearly marked with a cairn and you will see the yellow-blue tree if you look up the path. Total distance from the "parking area" to the left turn is just under a mile. Once you are on the path, there is no trouble following the route. The turn off the boundary line is barely even noticeable because of the traffic. Just keep following the path for 0.7 miles to the summit. It is a nice trek through mossy woods with glades, as well. I saw a Pine Martin in the trees here while descending. One last note - as you begin descending from the summit, you may notice a fork that you didn't see on the way up. I stayed right and had no problems.
